A jar of JYOWNAR pickle has no artificial preservatives to lean on — which means how you store it at home matters more than it would with a factory pickle. The good news is that keeping it fresh doesn’t take much, just a few habits our own kitchen has followed for years.
This is the single most important rule. A wet or damp spoon introduces moisture into the jar, and moisture is what lets mould start growing in an achaar that otherwise has nothing artificial working against it. Keep one dry spoon aside just for the pickle jar if you can, and avoid letting it touch other foods before dipping in.
That layer of oil sitting above the pickle isn’t just tradition — it’s a natural seal that keeps air away from the achaar underneath. After you take some out, press the rest back down so the oil can rise and cover the surface again. If the oil level ever looks low, it’s fine to top it up with a little fresh mustard oil.
A cool cupboard away from direct sunlight works well for most of the year. In very hot or humid weather, refrigeration after opening can help the pickle last longer, though the texture of the oil may thicken slightly — that’s normal and it loosens again at room temperature. Avoid storing near a stove or window where temperature swings a lot through the day.
A loosely closed lid lets in air and moisture over time. Close it firmly after every use, and store the jar upright so the oil stays where it should — covering the pickle, not pooling to one side. If you’ve transferred the pickle into a different container, make sure that lid seals just as well.
Any fuzzy growth on the surface, a sour smell that wasn’t there before, or oil that’s turned cloudy and separated are all signs to stop using that jar. This is rare when the steps above are followed, but with no artificial preservatives in the mix, it’s worth knowing what to watch for.
Not necessarily. A cool, dry cupboard works fine for most of the year — refrigeration is mainly useful once opened, during very hot or humid weather.
Stored correctly, with a dry spoon and the oil layer maintained, an opened jar can stay fresh for several months.
Treated this way, a jar of JYOWNAR pickle will hold its flavour for months — the same way it always has in a home kitchen.
